WASHINGTON (January 14, 2020) – Seven National Association of Realtors® leaders appear among this year’s Swanepoel Power 200 list. The Swanepoel Power 200 – SP200 – is considered “the definitive ranking of the leaders and executives in the residential real estate brokerage industry” and published annually by T3 Sixty.

The following NAR leaders were named to the 2020 SP200 list (includes portions of SP200 narratives):

#7 – Bob Goldberg, CEO (#1 among the SP200’s Most Powerful Association/MLS Executives)

  • In his second full year as NAR’s CEO, Bob Goldberg continues to stamp the nation’s largest trade association with his imprimatur and his “kinder, gentler” culture. As NAR CEO, he is the undisputed most powerful executive in the association category. Under his leadership, NAR has continued to work behind the scenes with legislators, policymakers and regulators on issues of interest to the Realtor® community. Beginning his tenure with promises to “smash the ivory tower” and “turn the pyramid upside down,” Goldberg continues to push for more transparency and open communication with state and local Realtor® association leaders, as well as with membership. He has been ranked in the SP200 top 10 three years in a row and in the top 40 seven years in a row.

#51 – Vince Malta, 2020 President (#5 among the SP200’s Most Powerful Association/MLS Executives)

  • The 2020 NAR president, Malta comes to the association leadership role as a 43-year industry vet and owner of San Francisco brokerage Malta & Co. A third-generation Realtor® and a former president of the California Association of REALTORS®, he will help lead NAR in a charged year that will see the association tackle the marketing of coming soon and pocket listings and the class-action antitrust lawsuits that name NAR as a defendant.

#53 – Katie Johnson, General Counsel and Chief Member Experience Officer (#6 among the SP200’s Most Powerful Association/MLS Executives)

  • As NAR’s general counsel and chief member experience officer, Johnson ensures NAR’s programs, policies and activities comply with the law. She will have a momentous 2020 as she helps NAR respond to and deal with the class-action antitrust lawsuits that name NAR as a defendant. Johnson joined NAR in 2007 and became general counsel in 2014.

#63 – Bill Malkasian, Chief Advocacy Officer (#7 among the SP200’s Most Powerful Association/MLS Executives)

  • As head of NAR’s lobbying efforts, Malkasian plays a critical role at the nation’s largest trade association and one of its most powerful advocacy organizations, which spent over $30 million on lobbying efforts in 2019 alone. He also directs the REALTORS® Political Action Committee’s political operations and oversees regional political directors and public issue advocacy.

#99 – Dr. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President, Research (#10 among the SP200’s Most Powerful Association/MLS Executives)

  • Widely acknowledged as the U.S.’s foremost residential real estate industry economist, Dr. Yun heads NAR’s economic department as chief economist, creating economic forecasts and providing housing market analysis for the trade group. Dr. Yun also leads NAR’s research group as the senior vice president of research, heading its marketing research and predictive analytics teams.

#112 – Shannon McGahn, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs (#13 among the SP200’s Most Powerful Association/MLS Executives)

  • As senior vice president of Government Affairs for the U.S.’s largest trade association in NAR, McGahn helps give voice to more than 1.4 million members. Before joining NAR, McGahn served as counselor to the U.S. Treasury Secretary and staff director for House Financial Services Committee.

#186 – Mark Birschbach, Senior Vice President, Strategic Business, Innovation and Technology

  • Birschbach is responsible for managing Second Century Ventures, NAR’s technology accelerator REACH®, the REALTOR Benefits® Program and The Center for REALTOR® Technology. Previously, he served as vice president of strategic investments at NAR and was responsible for managing several NAR investments.

“NAR stands at the forefront of the real estate industry and we’re fortunate to have talented and dedicated leaders throughout our organization,” said NAR 2020 President-Elect Charlie Oppler. “We congratulate our colleagues on this prestigious honor as they continue to innovate, educate, inspire, and blaze trails within their respective roles.”

According to T3 Sixty, it arrives at its annual SP200 list after spending “more than 400 hours analyzing hundreds of bios, annual reports and transaction and sales volume data.” It then sends “hundreds of requests for additional information, personally verifying stats, announcements, and actions that took place over the past year.”

Nominations for the Power 200 are accepted, but the majority of the 3,000 or so people reviewed and considered come from T3 Sixty's own database and ongoing research of the industry. Leaders are evaluated based on the office they hold, the decision-making power associated with the office, the financial resources at their disposal, their organization’s industry significance and geographical reach, public announcements about imminent changes, their tenure and their personal influence in the industry.

“Of all the association and MLS representatives on the list, NAR has by far, the largest and highest representation,” said T3 Sixty Chairman & CEO Stefan Swanepoel. “NAR is the glue that holds the residential real estate brokerage industry together and continues to play a key role in the industry’s growth, change, and development."
