The national director entitlement process for state associations and local associations can be found in Article IV, Section 1 of NAR’s Constitution.

The number of national directors allocated to the state associations and local boards for the following year is based on the primary membership recorded in the National REALTORS® Database System (M1) on July 31.

How NAR Calculates Director Entitlement

In November 2021, the NAR Board of Directors and Delegate Body approved changes proposed by the Governance GameChanger PAG. As a result, the calculation for Director Entitlement has changed.

The NAR Constitution states that each state, territory, and the District of Columbia association automatically is entitled to two national directors on the Board of Directors, one who is a primary member in a local association with 500-1,999 members, and is appointed by their state association; and one who is a primary member in a local association with 499 members or less, and is appointed by the state association. See Article IV, Section 1, subsection (R) if your state does not have the association sizes described above.

In addition, as outlined in Article IV, Section 1, subsection (N): 261 Directors appointed by state and territorial associations will be allocated to each state and territorial association pursuant to the following formula: the number of primary members in the state or territorial association as of July 31st of the year prior to service divided by the number of primary members in the National Association as of the same date, multiplied by 261. Fractions will be rounded using traditional rounding methods.

Further, as outlined in Article IV, Section 1, subsection (O): 425 Directors appointed by local associations will be allocated to each local association with at least 2,000 members as of July 31st the year prior to service pursuant to the following formula: the number of primary members in the local association as of July 31st of the year prior to service divided by the number of primary members in local associations with 2,000 or more members as of the same date multiplied by 425.
