Leaning into Empathy

Whether she’s helping to sell a mobile home or a mansion, Courtney Welch, 29, treats everyone with the same respect and value. She understands that the home—regardless of its size, condition or market value—is one of the most valuable things to her clients, and she wants them to know she’ll treat it as such. ”I’m not here to judge. We don’t know what an individual’s circumstances are, and I believe in treating others the way you want to be treated.”

Her capacity for empathy comes from personal experience, she says. About four years ago, her mother began suffering from debilitating bouts of depression, the kind that keeps a person bedbound. While maintaining a growing business, Welch found herself as a caretaker of sorts, helping her father and brother manage her mother’s needs.

“She’s doing better now, but when it was bad, my brother and I would go to her house every day to get her up and out for the day,” Welch says.

As a result of her mom’s experience, Welch has been vocal about the importance of mental health and makes it a point to treat everyone with kindness since “we’re all going through something.”
