Hot Home Trend: A Blank Slate With a Pop of Color

Designers say the trendiest look at the moment is to mute out the background, and go bold in the forefront.

The trending color palette for 2023 may seem subdued at first, but it comes with twists of bold color. Design experts recently surveyed by Fixr.com, a home improvement resource, chose “neutrals with color pops” as the trendiest color palette for 2023; last year, it ranked third.

The most favored style last year called for full-on color with warm neutrals and earth tones. This year, the backdrop is getting toned down, and color pops are woven strategically within.

Neutral color palettes have long been considered a safe choice for home interiors, but more color has been entering homes in a bigger way, from boldly painted walls to wallpaper.

By using neutrals as a backdrop, homeowners may feel more freedom to experiment with smaller doses of bold new colors, according to Fixr’s 2023 Paint & Color Trends Report. A white or light gray backdrop may allow some of the 2023 Colors of the Year to come forward, like Pantone’s Viva Magenta, a crimson red, or the red-orange pop of Benjamin Moore’s Raspberry Blush.

Last year, Fixr’s report noted that earth tones and warm neutrals were the trendiest color palettes. They remain a popular choice and continue to be used throughout designs. Case in point: Terracotta, a rich red-brown, is the most popular color for 2023, selected by 50% of design experts.
