2017
The following four Associations were selected as 2017 recipients:
Atlanta REALTORS® Association ($2,500)
The Atlanta REALTORS® Association used 2017 REALTORS® Safety Reimbursement Grant funding to create six 5-minute videos, “Take 5 for Safety", dealing with safety protocols, common scenarios licensees might encounter, and self-defense demonstrations. The strategy was to limit videos to 5 minutes to help entice agents who otherwise don’t dedicate time to the topic of safety, due to busy lifestyles and limited interest spans. The goal of the series is to raise members' awareness of the risks associated with the real estate industry. The series features two local detectives, Captain Ken Malcom and Captain Philip Bradford, who teach Safety courses through Atlanta REALTORS® School, the Georgia Institute of Real Estate. Topics include: Avoiding Dangerous Situations, Rear Bear Hug Attack, Rear Choke Hold Attack, and Front Choke Attack. Videos are accessible on YouTube, as well as several Association websites, so ARA can share this information to over 10,000 REALTORS®, as well as the public. Watch the videos here.
Orange County Association of REALTORS® ($2,500)
The Orange County Association of REALTORS® used 2017 REALTORS® Safety Reimbursement Grant funding to assist with hosting a "REALTOR® Safety Boot Camp" taught by Jeff Liberman, President, Crisis Control Solutions. Topics included: Situational Awareness, Protective Intelligence, Office Safety, and Personal Safety. In this dynamic presentation, attendees learned how to recognize the significant threats endemic to the real estate industry, including the targeting of real estate agents by career criminals and sex offenders, and how to verify the identities of prospective clients and screen them for criminal and civil litigation histories, concerning character issues, and potential violence. Key takeaways for members included: developing skills to analyze neighborhoods for crime patterns, sex offenders, and other hazards; gaining valuable insight into criminal behavior and the psychology of survival; and acquiring practical skills to detect, deter, and disengage from violent predators. From the seminar, OCAR is producing a 5-video series that will be available to view for free on their website in Spring 2018.
OCAR also held an Active Shooter Response Training for OCAR staff taught by Glen Garrity, a retired 21-year police detective and owner of G2 Safeguards. This seminar was based on Department of Homeland Security principals, with the benefit of increasing the odds of every OCAR staff person’s survival.
Portland Metropolitan Association of REALTORS® ($2,500)
Portland Metro Association of REALTORS® used 2017 REALTORS® Safety Reimbursement Grant funding to assist with funding a Safety Series that was scheduled during REALTOR® Safety Month. The series consisted of social media posts and events that reached different target audiences to provide maximum exposure to the importance of REALTOR® safety.
Carl Carter Jr was the keynote speaker at a membership luncheon hosted by PMAR’s Masters Circle (Million Dollar Club). Over a hundred REALTORS® registered to hear Carl tell his mother's harrowing story and talk about how that event inspired him to start a Foundation whose mission is to ensure every REALTOR® comes home safe.
PMAR’s Young Professional Network collaborated with an affiliate member, Empowered Focused Self Defense, to host a 4-hour safety workshop. The workshop covered general personal safety, REALTOR® safety during open houses and when showing property, physical escape techniques and scenario practice. This dynamic and interactive class was taken by 25 REALTORS® of varying ages and experience levels.
The social media component utilized our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) to promote REALTOR® Safety. Content was posted that included event details, videos, statistical information, infographics, REALTOR Benefits® Program safety products and services, and tips from NAR.
PMAR’s Safety Series raised awareness about safety on the job, helped our members be more knowledgeable about safety techniques and empowered them to take control during potentially dangerous situations. Attendees to the events left feeling more informed about REALTOR® Safety and learned techniques to defend themselves if needed.
Utah Association of REALTORS® ($2,500)
The Utah Association of REALTORS® used 2017 REALTORS® Safety Reimbursement Grant funding to assist with the cost of hosting a REALTOR® Safety Seminar and Safety Fair in September 2017. For the seminar, they brought in Sgt. Dave Kochanowski from Unified Police to talk about important safety topics for REALTORS®, including situational awareness, self-defense, and tips for how to prevent becoming a victim. He also talked about current trends in local crime and dangerous misconceptions about crime in their local area. At the end of Kochanowski’s training, they had a Damsel in Defense representative talk about how to use various safety products such as stun guns, pepper spray, etc.
UAR also took the opportunity to advertise its REALTOR® Safe Places program to the REALTORS® and affiliates attending. The Safe Places program connects REALTORS® with affiliate offices. This allows REALTORS® when they are away from the office to meet new clients in a safe environment before showing property to them.
Exhibitors of UAR’s Safety Fair included safety products, hazard information, tech tools, and MLS resources. To make the event more financially feasible, they filled in remaining booths with general sponsors to help cover event costs. They had approximately 475 attendees (exceeding than their goal of 400). Following the seminar and Safety Fair, viewers of REALTOR® Safety Place website increased by 28%.
