But as NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports, Black Americans still lag behind. Asian Americans and Hispanics saw record-high rates of home ownership in 2022, according to the National Association of REALTORS®, but there was only a slight uptick in Black buyers. In fact, over the past decade, the gap between Black and White homeownership grew. The report finds Black households especially pay a bigger share of their income for rent and have more student debt that makes it hard to say for down payment. And with lower incomes on average, there are far fewer homes they can afford. The overall share of first-time home buyers have shrunk the past couple years as home prices skyrocketed. The REALTORS® Association has found that buyers on average are older, richer and Whiter.
