Don’t Stay Neutral: Use Trendy Styles to Sell Homes

Don’t play it too safe with your décor. Going too neutral can be boring and forgettable. Wall colors and home accents featuring a fresh, on-trend palette can entice buyers to take notice.

Below are some of our favorite style and color trends that pair beautifully with a neutral foundation, bringing just the right “wow” factor to engage buyers the moment they walk through the door.

TRENDING STYLES

Farmhouse Chic

A kitchen with soft bright wood furniture and trim

This relaxed design aesthetic mixes whites, creams, and grays with a variety of natural accents in wood, wicker, cotton, sisal, stone, and various metallics. This can be a great way to add a modern touch to a country style kitchen or family room with a splash of contemporary sophistication.

Rustic Modern

The family room pictured above features a relaxed, modern look that also feels fresh and sophisticated to match the informal lifestyle of today’s buyers. To play up this trend, our designers used a faux cowhide area rug, paired with a clean-lined sectional, weathered wood tables, inviting vignettes, and pops of grey and pink throw pillows.

Pottery Barn, Living Spaces

This trend is about embracing unique patterns, textures, and handcrafted accents that feel like they're from around the world. For a unique focal point, hang an assortment of natural woven baskets over a mantel, sofa, or on a kitchen wall. Vignettes placed in trays using ceramic vases with varying shapes and sizes will add warmth and interest to any space.

TRENDING COLORS

Shades of Bold Blue

Some of the leading paint color forecasters are announcing their picks for what will be hot in 2020, and different shades of navy, indigo, and cobalt are growing in popularity. We love this rich, serene, and bold hue for its versatility when used as a subtle neutral or in accents that create energy in a space. It also works with every decor style and pairs with a range of other colors, textures, and finishes.

Our Favorite Neutral: Black

Magnolia Home, Pottery Barn, William Sonoma

A great way to add instant depth and elegance to a room of whites, creams, and grays is with classic black accents. We love that it is being shown in every texture and finish, from velvet and leather to natural wood and heavy rug weaves. Make a statement in a neutral kitchen and update lighting with black metallic hanging pendants, drawer pulls, and chairs.

Warm, Earthy Hues

Nature-inspired colors such as terracotta, rich browns, olive greens, and amber are in the spotlight. They’re a great way to incorporate the warmth of the outdoors into your home. The options are endless for incorporating these hues—whether with potted plants and succulents, warm copper and bronze metallic finishes, throw pillows, or side chairs. These colors can add energy and warmth that will have universal appeal.
